Day-Of Shirts!

I wanted something different to wear on the day of the wedding, something more than a white tee that says "bride" in crystals or something (not knocking them, they are totally cute) - I just wanted something a bit more custom.

Viola! I created a fun, funky graphic in photoshop that was in a rockstar/vintage poster vibe. I got a camisole for me and a t-shirt for FI to wear while he's doing set-up the morning of. Mine will end up covered in makeup and hairspray, but I think it's just too adorable!

I printed the shirts at Spreadshirt - I'm anxious to see what they look like in person - I hope they come soon! And I hope I can keep myself from wearing it until October!

Update: Shower Dress

So... I had to delete my post from a few days ago about my shower dress. Actually, I probably should have just kept it, but once you hit that delete button there is just no going back on Blogger apparently... Anyways - the dress came and it just looked dreadful on me. I usually compare my figure to a sack of potatoes - but in this case - I looked more like a bag of ruffled potato chips... It was at least 4 sizes too big and it had a spot! Thankfully I can return it, but it's back to the drawing board.

Mum and I are going to hit up the Natick Collection in a couple of weeks when I have a free weekend. I usually have better luck in person - and NC is chock full o' my favorite stores - I'm sure there must be something in that whole place I can wear! I'm also on the hunt for something to wear to my sister's rehearsal, so maybe I'll get lucky twice! I want to wait until the fall season comes out to find something for our rehearsal dinner - I have a feeling summer fabrics just won't cut it in October...

Sucess! He has a ring!

We had a daunting task ahead of us today: wedding band shopping.

I don't think either of us were looking forward to this - but it had to be done! We're both pretty indecisive, it can take forever for us to make a decision - we have to weigh all the options.

We started at Long's in Natick - friendly service guy (well, they all were everywhere we went, which was good), nice selection. The bands were pricey, but we narrowed down a couple to keep on "the list." Next we went to Barmakian, right down the street. Our sales guy was also getting married in October (next year) so that was fun. I must say, they had a HUGE selection and their rings were much more reasonably priced. We added a couple more rings to the list.

By this time, his finger is throbbing from the countless amount of rings being pushed onto it, and he's not really feeling anything. The sales people told us, "when you find the right one, you'll just know." Hmm, I was dubious - they said the same thing about finding a wedding gown and I never had that feeling...

We grab some lunch and FI isn't sure any ring we've seen so far is for him. Thankfully the Natick Collection is nearby so we go into the mall and putter about. I wanted to avoid mall jewelers, but hey - it's his ring and I'll get him whatever he wants. (I'm not sure if it's traditional for the bride to buy the groom's ring, but it felt right) We start at Kay's - again, nice people - but severely limited selection. He still manages to find 2 rings he likes though. Down the hall to Ross-Simons. We both fall in love with a Scott Kay ring but not the $900 pricetag. Upstairs to Zales - meger selections, neither of us care for anything. Across the hall to Gordon's, who informs us that they are closing their doors in a week. I get a small burst of hope that this would mean a deep discount - but no such luck. They pull a ring out of a drawer that FI really likes (I think he liked the price most, $113...) - but I urge him to go to one more place. Well, we round the corner and Helzberg Diamonds has closed down... alright... we spy a Hannoush across the hall. Inside, we ask to see a couple rings. The third ring FI puts on, he looks at me and says "yep - this is it." Huh?

"Just like that?" I said. "Yep, just like that." Ok, we'll take it!

It must have been at least the 90th ring he tried on, no joke. He ended up with a simple brushed tungsten band (pictured) with a beveled mirror edge. Even better, after hearing all day long that "tungsten can't be engraved" - the wonderful lady at Hannoush tells us that they have the special equipment for engraving tungsten - and even more - it'll be free! Ok, I was sold.

I'm still a bit flabbergasted though. All day long we were looking for something different and unique - we even had an eye on these great bark bands by Beth Cyr - an homage to FI's love of hiking and all things outdoors. He tried on so much that was fun and funky, so when he put on this simple band and smiled, I was floored. But whatever makes him happy - he has to wear it ;)

It should be here in 3 weeks, then it's off to the engraver to have "le gra go deo" inscribed inside (it means, "with love forever" in Gaelic - a nod to my heritage). Now we just have to get on the ball and order my bands from the designer in NYC... good news though, we both found out our ring sizes so at least my wedding bands will fit! Still have to get sizing cleats put in my engagement ring - but I've had enough of jewelers for this week!

To Veil Or Not To Veil?

So... I was anti-veil. And not just a little, I was a staunch non-veil supporter. Don't get me wrong, they look beautiful on other people - but on me - ridiculous. But, I also think a wedding dress looks absolutely out of place and insane on me as well - so, I suppose I'm biased.

For months, I've been going on and on to my Mum about how I wouldn't wear a veil.... and then... she told me to start looking for something to wear in my hair. I was set on a jeweled headband at first. Something simple and perhaps art-deco inspired. I'm particular, which left me little options. I did narrow the field down to a couple, but they were each around $200 a pice. That's right, two-hundred dollars... for a headband. Now, I'll throw down a nice chunk of change for a new MK clutch - but a headband? Not going to happen.

So then we considered a comb - again, something vintage-inspired. Here I had better luck, but of course, everything I found was muy expensive. If I won't pay $200 for a headband I sure as heck won't pay $150 for a comb! Well, technically my mother is paying... but still. Mum's not going into the poor house over bridal accessories.

Then came thoughts of that darn veil... I kept thinking that my whole look for the day would just be "too much" - too much lace, too much bolero, too much bride. After combing through the La Sposa 2009 collection once more (my gown is from the 2008 collection) - and seeing several girls in very similar dresses with boleros to mine - and they all had veils on.

Huh. Maybe I had been too hard on the veil?

But then what veil to get? There are literally, thousands of options. My favorite was the silk tulle veils - of course I would love them, silk tulle runs $300 a yard. Stick me in a discount store and I will pick out the most expensive thing in there - without fail. I also loved the veils by La Sposa, but again they run between $200 - 500. Yeah... I'm going to be wearing this thing for an hour...

Thankfully, there are hundreds of veil sites online. Maybe thousands. After looking around, I found one on eBay I really liked, was more than reasonably priced, and it looked like it would match my dress perfectly. It's pictured above, an ivory Mantilla veil, from PamperedBride. Now, eBay can be a girl's best friend or worst enemy - Yes, I did stay up until 2 am last week to stalk one of my auctions, and ended up losing anyways - it all worked out though, I got the same thing from another seller for half the price and didn't have to fight over it! Thank goodness the veil was a "buy it now" item - no fight necessary!

Within a half hour of ordering the veil - I received an email that it was just put in the mail! Thankfully they also have a return option, so if it comes and I slip back into my veil-hating ways, it can go back. I have the feeling I might like it though... and it will make Mum happy - which is worth much more than the price of some tulle for a day :).

DIY Challenge: Ceremony Decor

So, I found this online (I believe it was created by Karen Tran) and I'm obsessed. I've issued a challenge to both me and the FI to re-create this masterpiece!

We're going to construct the frame backdrop out of PVC most likely. The columns will be made out of plywood, but we are thinking of making them a little thinner and less "heavy" looking.

Here's what I've purchased so far to re-create the look on a budget:

  1. Silk leis from Save-On-Crafts: I purchased 48 leis, we need 2.5 strung together to make 20 garlands 6.5 feet long.
  2. Beaded rope from Cristalier: To keep this in a reasonable budget, I couldn't swing the $6 per yard price tag of the chandelier crystals and opted for the beaded rope at a budget-friendly $3.95 per yard. I ordered 24 yards. The strands will hang at varying lengths of 6 ft, 5 ft, 4 ft and 3 ft.
  3. Large drop crystals from Cristalier: I ordered 20 of these large American cut crystals to hang at the end of each beaded rope.
I have yards of white, silky, crinkly fabric in the attic that I got for free years ago, which will cap off the sides and cover the center pole. Since we're still undecided on the columns, and therefore the vases/orchids, I'm holding off on purchasing those for right now. When the decision is made, I'm sure I can find some large glass vases at Christmas Tree Shop, and Ikea has nice latex orchids for $5 a piece. I'm confident that we can completely re-create this look on a budget! Check back in a few weeks as we attempt to set this up in a trial-run in our backyard to work out any technical issues!

Shushka's Shower

We had a shower for my younger sister this past weekend! The weather was beautiful and it was a fantastic day filled with great food and even live entertainment! I was lucky enough to be able to DIY a lot of the elements of the shower; centerpieces, favors, and invitations.

CENTERPIECES:
  • Enameled Pots, Joanne Fabrics
  • Curly Willow Branches, Christmas Tree
  • Reindeer Moss, AC Moore
  • Mushroom Birds, AC Moore
  • Silk Flowers, AC Moore
  • Round styrofoam disks
  • White floral tape
  • Sand
  • Hot glue
I started the centerpieces by filling the pots 2/3 full of sand. I then trimmed my styrofoam disk to fit inside the pot, just below the lip. I secured with hot glue. I then took one branch of curly willow, trimmed it to the desired height, then pierced the center of the foam and down into the sand. I then worked outward from the center, varying the heights of the branches and their directions. I covered the foam with reindeer moss, securing with hot glue where I could. Then I used floral tape to attach flowers and leaves throughout the branches. The final touch was adding a little bird sitting on a branch.

FAVORS:
  • Jello Jigglers Egg Mold, eBay
  • Cello bags, AC Moore
  • Pour & melt soap, AC Moore
  • Twig bird nests, found online
  • Favor tags
  • Ribbon
These were so much fun to make! I did this the easy way - pour and melt soap. I used two kinds, shea butter soap, and an avocado cucumber soap. The shea butter soap was mixed with yellow coloring to tint it ivory, orange oil, and lemon peel. The avocado soap was mixed with red food coloring, tinting it pink, and exfoliating poppy seeds were mixed in. I let the soap cool in the molds in the refrigerator, then placed each one on a small nest in a cello bag. These were tied with favor tags I made which read "thank you for helping the lovebirds build their nest."

I think everything was a big success and my sister had a good time. I had to take a break from helping with the gifts to rescue a snake pulled out of the pool - so all in all it was a good day!
